The local South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) plays an important role in the community, says manager Christine Jordaan.
"We are encouraged by the BC Chamber of Commerce to celebrate Chamber Week [Feb. 21-25] and we are proud to do so. The chamber wears various hats, particularly in a small community … one of referrals; networking; and community events."
The chamber office receives numerous calls from out of town as well as in town asking for information about various businesses, says Jordaan.
"They may be looking for various products or services and we also get calls from tourists asking about our area."
She notes the tourism calls are directed to the South Cariboo Visitor Centre.
"Networking between businesses is another huge part of our duties. It's opening the channels of communication."
There are regular monthly networking events, which are either a luncheon or a business after hours mixer. Non-members are encouraged to attend, says Jordaan, to find out what chamber is all about and to hear the upcoming community events.
"At the last luncheon, we had 33 people attend, and it was wonderful given that most people are extremely busy with their businesses."
The chamber’s community events include the Hot July Nights Show 'n Shine; Hallowe'en party in partnership with Canlan Ice Sports; and the Santa Parade and Midnight Madness, and Jordaan says these events are looked after by chamber volunteers.
"The chamber is membership driven, its strengths are the members. We look to members for support and to guide us on what they want," she says, adding the SCCC has 150 members.
"One of the local initiatives is our Chamber Coins; it’s a great way to encourage people to spend money locally."
