The Cariboo Regional District Board elected current chair and area H director Margo Wagner to serve as chair for another year while area E director Melynda Neufeld was elected vice-chair.

There were two nominees for chair, Wagner and Electoral Area D director Steve Forseth. Area E director Melynda Neufeld, Area L director Eric de Vries and vice-chair and area C director John Massier stood for the position of vice chair.

“It’s an honour to be re-elected by your peers,” Wagner said.

Regional district boards are required under provincial legislation to elect a new chair and vice-chair at the first board meeting each November.

District of 100 Mile Council briefs

Volunteer firefighters deserve tax break

Council passed a motion to write a letter to support changes to Bill C-310 to the Income Tax Act to increase the tax credit given to volunteer firefighters from $3,000 to $10,000. Currently, firefighters who work a minimum of 200 hours in a year are allowed to claim the annual credit. According to the Fire Underwriters Survey if they exceed 200 hours the credit decreases.

Council applies for Business Facade funding

A motion was passed in support of an application made to Northern Development Initiative Trust for a grant up to $20,000 for the 2024 Business Facade Improvement Cariboo-Chilcotin/Lillooet Regional Development program. Coun. Ralph Fossum asked why more businesses do not take advantage of the program, noting that there was money left over. Coun. Donna Barnett suggested the information be sent to the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce and it could help get the information to businesses.

Accessibility committee report

A report was received by council giving an update on the newly formed 100 Mile House Accessibility Committee. Committee chair Coun. Ralph Fossum said they were getting off and there were some excited volunteers on the committee. One thing they are discovering is that most people think of mobility issues.

“We don’t necessarily think of mental, we don’t think of the implications of vision, signage,” he said. They will be bringing in guest speakers to help them understand the nature of disabilities in the community.
